DuLany Design shelf styling essentials

Shelf styling essentials

After I shared this updated bookshelf, I received a lot of questions about shelf styling. It’s not a perfect science, but there are a few materials I consistently incorporate. Read on for my shelf styling essentials.

Baskets

I use woven baskets at the bottom of shelving to help ground the assortment, add texture, and maximize storage. Use lidded baskets in dining room shelving to conceal placemats and seasonal serveware while keeping them in close reach.

Pottery and sculptural objects

Pottery and vases soften with rounded edges, varied sizing, and interesting textures. Larger pottery can stand on its own as a statement while smaller pieces can be used to add height to a stack of books. Pottery is one of the most versatile objects to add visual interest.

Natural elements

Natural elements like wood, greenery and crystals breathe life into a styled vignette. Consider including driftwood for a more organic look and wood links or frames to add warmth. I use faux greenery in styled shelves for easy upkeep; faux succulents are my favorite. Crystals are like jewelry; they can be used anywhere to brighten things up.

Art, books and accessories

I usually add accessories like art, books and decorative objects last. Art and books are great for layering and adding height. Use decorative objects to add a finishing and personalized touch.

Using a consistent color palette with similar colors and textures will help make your vignette look more cohesive and collected.

I hope this post on my shelf styling essentials is a helpful resource you can refer to in the future.
