Fabulous and functional entryway

The first impression you get when walking into a home sets the tone for how you feel about the rest of it. For this family, it was important to have a fabulous and functional entryway. We repurposed accessories the client already owned to create a stylish design solution.

There is so much guidance on the internet on styling a front entryway. Often, the advice to layer upon layer results in a space that is cluttered and ill-suited to a family’s needs. I believe less is more when it comes to styling a fabulous and functional entryway.

Here are three principles I follow when styling entryways:

Space

A console table may look great online but overwhelm a small entryway if not sized properly. Always measure both your space and furniture before committing to a particular piece to ensure it doesn’t obstruct your door or walkway. For smaller entryways opt for an open, narrow console such as the Blue Dot Strut Console we used in the featured space.

Storage

Even with an open console table, it’s easy to incorporate stylish storage like baskets for shoes or bowls for keys and other accessories. Functional storage options with defined purpose help to cut clutter and enable you to get out the door quicker. This entryway is not the home’s primary entrance, so the baskets flanking the console can be used for either plants or shoes, and the succulent arrangement also serves to conceal mail keys.

Symmetry

Our brains have a strong preference for symmetry. In interior design, it creates visual balance and has a calming and relaxing effect. When styling an entryway we always begin with a symmetric vignette, and then add or remove accessories until we reach the desired look. Here we’ve flanked a slatted mirror with small Regina Andrew concrete table lamps, and finished the table styling with a faux succulent and crystal arrangement.
