Melissa Trivette DuLany Design wellness ditching toxins in kitchen

Ditching the toxins in my kitchen

One of the changes I’ve made to improve my family’s health is ditching the toxins in my kitchen. This means reducing the use of products around the kitchen that are known to leach into food. Here are the items I ditched and alternatives I replaced them with.

Ditch aluminum foil

Aluminum foil is known to leach into foods at higher temperatures. Instead of lining my pans with foil, I now use either parchment paper or silicon baking mats.

Ditch disposable plastic bags

We keep a few of these around for emergencies, but for daily use I’ve switched to Zip Top reusable silicon food storage bags. I decided on this brand because they are made in the USA. I love the reusable silicon food storage bags because they create less waste, are easy to travel with, and I know we’re not ingesting microplastics with our food.

Ditch plastic food storage containers

For the same reason stated above, I switched our plastic food storage containers to Mason Craft & More airtight kitchen food storage glass jars. I keep a few plastic containers around to hold packaged snacks, and use the glass storage for all foods that directly touch the jar, like nuts, popcorn, rice, etc. They glass jars keep a better seal and I’ve noticed snacks stay fresh longer.

Ditch plastic/melamine kids dishware

When I started looking into alternatives to plastic kids dishware, I was surprised to find that most colored bamboo plates contain melamine as a binding agent. I found EcoMatters Melamine-Free Bamboo Kids plates and Bobo&Boo plant-based plates. The latter isn’t bamboo, but instead derived from cornstarch, sugar cane, straw and woodchips, and is also melamine-free. I also like Mushie silicon plate and WeeSprout silicon plates, but decided on the bamboo and plant-based plates because I wanted something rigid and easily stackable.

Ditch non-stick and aluminum cookware

I use either stainless steel, ceramic, or enameled cookware. I have a stainless steel muffin tin, loaf pan, cookie sheet, and ceramic cake baking pan and the Ninja Max XL Air Fryer with a ceramic basket. For everyday cooking, I use the All-Clad D3 stainless cookware set and the Dansk Kobenstyle White Casserole. We also store leftovers in glass containers.

Gradually ditching the toxins in my kitchen and replacing with non-toxic plates, cookware, and food storage was an easy way to improve my family’s health. It gives me peace to reduce my family’s exposure to toxins that are either known or suspected of causing health issues.
