Cabin on the creek
For the last 10 years, my husband and I have been looking to invest in property. He’s always wanted larger acreage while I wanted waterfront property. Earlier this year, we finally found our compromise – the cabin on the creek.
A few times a year we’ll drive out to a property that interests us. I’m usually drawn to the hill country, so didn’t have high expectations for the property my husband found about two hours north east of us in Woodville, TX. That is until we arrived.
The cabin
Getting to the property was an adventure in itself. After driving one mile down an unpaved private road, the only direct access is via the easement cleared for the powerline. A 50-year old, 700 sq. ft. cabin sat just above the flood plain. The previous owner had inherited it from his grandfather, and the cabin sat vacant for the past 10 years. The condition was as you would expect. That didn’t deter us because the cabin is not what attracted us to the property. In reality, having a structure in any condition was a plus because it meant utilities such as power and plumbing were already connected.
The creek
What attracted us to the property? It sits on 25 acres, and the entire western edge borders a swimmable creek. The first time we walked it I felt like I was in a state park. The banks of the creek are lined not with dirt, but with sand that compares to what you’d find at a beach. This place felt magical. I felt opportunity and the promise of memories to be made for our children, and hopefully, grandchildren.
Cabin progress
We thought the cabin would be a complete teardown, but luckily salvaged the foundation and frame. We’ve replaced the exterior siding, windows, doors, and the roof, and are in the final phase of interior demo and framing. The property is a virgin forest, so we invested in a sawmill to mill the fencing, decking, and interior wood from the trees on our property.
What’s next
We are so excited and thankful for this opportunity to create a creekside retreat for our family. Check back soon for cabin on the creek design plans and progress.
