Maximize form and function in kitchen renovations
In kitchen renovations, I start by asking clients how they want to feel in the space. This allows us to focus on details that make the biggest impact in the heart of the home. The original cabinets and footprint of this dated kitchen worked, so we focused on maximizing form and function in the following ways:
Open it up
Relocating the existing wall oven didn’t free enough space for a freestanding island, so we enlarged the pass through. This enhanced the flow between the kitchen and adjoining living space, and provided the dine-in functionality as an island.
Light it up
It’s critical to incorporate the right mix of lighting in a kitchen. I recommend combining recessed, under-cabinet task, and pendant accent lighting. The right balance of lighting creates an inviting, welcoming space where it’s easy to see and safe to work.
Add millwork
I love using millwork to dress up a kitchen. In this space we kept the original cabinets and, unfortunately, 18 inches of soffit concealing ventilation. We worked with a carpenter to install multiple layers of crown moulding to create a custom, stunning focal point in the kitchen.
Paint
The easiest and most cost-effective way to transform a kitchen is to paint the cabinets. Paint transformed this dreary, dark kitchen into a light, restorative space.
