Bald Head Island Exterior Design
Bald Head Island is a very special place for me. Not only did my husband propose at the top of Old Baldy Lighthouse, we also got married at the Shoals Club. We hadn’t been back for a while, so it was a treat to visit with our children recently after nearly four years. Beyond the obvious reasons I love Bald Head Island, I enjoy driving around looking at the island-style homes. As the location of the 2017 Southern Living Idea House, it has no shortage of dreamy beach homes. Here are three prominent Bald Head Island exterior design styles throughout the island:
Galvanized metal roofs
While metal roofs are a common theme in coastal design for durability, I was surprised at how many of the metal roofs in Bald Head Island are galvanized. My favorite, unexpected exterior pairing is a sleek metal roof with the traditional texture of cedar shake siding for a modern take on Nantucket-style.
Cedar shake or shake-style siding
Nearly all the homes on Bald Head Island feature either cedar shake or a shake-style siding. They often follow a classic coastal color palette of white, light blue/gray, or creamy tan. While all the homes are different, there is a calming consistency in the colors and materials.
Wide-open porches, minimal railings
To capitalize on the beautiful beach views, many homes feature cable porch railing topped with wood. Cable porch railings don’t obstruct the view so you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean.
